A summary of my two-part article on folate:
✅ Folate is needed to support methylation- a process our body does that can regulate our gene expression, detoxification, cell health, brain function and more.
✅ We could have a genetic issue that could impair methylation…increasing our need for folate.
✅ Folic acid is synthetic form of folate. It is cheap and stable so easy to add to foods and supplements. But it could cause health issues if we have difficulties metabolising it. Therefore, natural folate (in food or supplements) might be the better option
✅ Folate also reduces homocysteine levels. High levels of homocysteine is linked to cardiovascular and many other disease.
✅ Eat lots of liver, legumes and leafy greens and you will be full of folate.
✅ I could have saved myself a lot of time if I just wrote this conclusion!
Part 2: The Folate Debate- Folic Acid v Folate
So this is Part 2 of my writings about folic acid- you can read Part 1 below. I will be focusing on the differences between folic acid and folate, our genetics and methylation and why folate can help reduce homocysteine levels- a key marker for cardiovascular disease. Head straight to the conclusion for the TL;DR!
